Grifols in Canada: building for the future
Grifols has produced plasma medicines for Canadian patients for over 20 years.
The company’s long-term commitment to building a system that relies mainly on Canadian plasma took a decisive step forward in 2020 with the acquisition of a plasma-processing and purification complex in Montréal, QC.
In Canada, Grifols is expanding the country's domestic production capacity for plasma-derived medicines to help meet growing demand, ease pressures on the healthcare system, and ensure a more reliable supply of these therapies for patients across the country.
Since 2020, hawse have invested more than $1 billion in Canada and created close to 800 jobs through its manufacturing, plasma collection, commercial and national operations, while supporting local economies and partnerships.
Local operations
Our Canadian presence includes commercial offices, a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Montréal and 17 plasma donation centres that operate under license from Health Canada.
Together, these represent a direct investment in Canadian healthcare infrastructure.
Agreement with Canadian Blood Services
In September 2022, Grifols and Canadian Blood Services established an innovative 15-year renewable strategic agreement. The agreement is designed to significantly increase domestic plasma collection, improve Canada’s immunoglobulin self-sufficiency, and establish the country’s first integrated domestic supply chain with in-country fractionation capabilities for these medicines.
The agreement brings together Canadian Blood Services’ national mandate and responsibility for ensuring access to blood products, including plasma medicines such as immunoglobulins, with Grifols’ vertically integrated expertise across donation, testing, logistics, fractionation, purification and manufacturing. Under the agreement, Grifols collects plasma for the processing and manufacturing services required to produce immunoglobulin therapies, exclusively for Canadian Blood Services.
Patients in Canada are the primary focus of the agreement. Plasma collected by Grifols under the agreement is processed to manufacture immunoglobulin medications exclusively for the Canadian healthcare system and Canadian patients.
Grifols does not legally own the plasma. Instead, Grifols receives a service fee for the collection, processing and manufacturing services required to produce immunoglobulin medicines. All resulting immunoglobulin is delivered to CBS.
Plasma contains several therapeutic proteins. Once immunoglobulin has been isolated, the remaining proteins can be used to make other medicines, including albumin.
Canada currently has enough albumin to meet Canadian patient needs. Once those needs have been met, Canadian Blood Services has agreed to make excess albumin derived from Grifols-collected plasma available for patients in other countries rather than allowing it to go unused and be destroyed. Proceeds from the excess albumin help offset the cost of immunoglobulin medicines for Canadian health systems.
Regulation and safety
All our donation centres in Canada are licensed and regulated by Health Canada. Donor and patient safety guide every decision and are our top priority.
Every Grifols centre in Canada must comply with federal requirements covering donor eligibility, medical supervision, collection procedures, testing, traceability and adverse-event reporting. Meeting these standards requires continuous monitoring, accountability and improvement across the network.
