Building Canada’s supply, in Canada

Our plasma-processing and purification complex in Montréal, Québec, is central to the goal of creating a made-in-Canada immunoglobulin supply. The site is being developed in phases, including albumin purification and filling, plasma fractionation and immunoglobulin purification capabilities.

Work is underway on the fractionation and immunoglobulin purification facilities, which are expected to become operational by the end of 2027. Once fully operational, the site will have an annual fractionation capacity of 1.5 million liters of plasma ‒ enough to manufacture essential plasma-derived medicines for Canadian patients with immunodeficiencies and critical-care needs. By producing closer to home, Grifols aims to reduce reliance on imports, from countries such as the United States, shorten lead times and strengthen the security of Canada's plasma-derived therapy supply.

Alongside fractionation, the Montréal complex includes dedicated immunoglobulin and albumin purification facilities ‒ the full industrial capability required to process Canadian plasma domestically, from raw material to finished medicine.

Since 2020, we have invested more than $1 billion in Canada. This investment includes the Montréal complex, plasma collection operations and the creation of about 800 Canadian jobs.

Our Work in Canada

For nearly three decades, Grifols has been making plasma therapeutics for Canada. Learn more about our journey from contract manufacturing to in-country plasma collection and therapeutics manufacturing – and see what’s yet to come.

More than two decades in Canada

Grifols has provided Canadian patients with plasma medicines for more than 20 years—evolving from contract manufacturing to in-country plasma collection and now, domestic therapeutics manufacturing. Each phase brings Canada a step closer to a more resilient domestic supply.

A decisive milestone came in 2020 with the acquisition of a plasma-processing and purification complex in Montréal. Grifols then entered the Canadian plasma collection market in 2022 through the acquisition of its first donation centre in Winnipeg and now operates 17 plasma donation centres across the country for the benefit of Canadian patients.

The Canadian Blood Services Partnership

In September 2022, Grifols and Canadian Blood Services established an innovative 15-year renewable strategic agreement. The agreement is designed to significantly increase domestic plasma collection, improve Canada’s immunoglobulin self-sufficiency, and establish the country’s first integrated domestic supply chain with in-country fractionation capabilities for these medicines.

The agreement brings together Canadian Blood Services’ national mandate and responsibility for ensuring access to blood products, including plasma medicines such as immunoglobulins, with Grifols’ vertically integrated expertise across donation, testing, logistics, fractionation, purification and manufacturing. Under the agreement, Grifols collects plasma for the processing and manufacturing services required to produce immunoglobulin therapies, exclusively for Canadian Blood Services.

A central principle of the partnership is that all immunoglobulin therapies manufactured from plasma collected under the agreement are created for Canadian patients, and that every donation is used as responsibly and efficiently as possible. Canadian patients and Canadian donors come first.

Jobs and economic impact

Grifols' Canadian operations employ close to 800 people across the Montréal manufacturing site, the plasma donation centres and national operations, supporting skilled employment in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, quality, operations and donor services.

Beyond creating skilled jobs and supporting communities across Canada, our investment is helping strengthen the country’s plasma collection and manufacturing capacity and advance Canada’s progress toward greater immunoglobulin self-sufficiency.

Community engagement

Grifols is committed to the communities where it operates. Alongside its donation centres and manufacturing site, the company supports local health and food-security initiatives.

In Ontario, Grifols partners with Feed Ontario, which works with food banks across the province through employee-led food drives, volunteer programs and financial support.

In Manitoba, Grifols works with Harvest Manitoba, which distributes more than 12 million pounds of food each year across over 350 food banks and agencies serving roughly 50,000 people a month

Grifols staff and donors take part directly, showing how local partnerships strengthen community well-being. Grifols Canada is regularly exploring additional ways to give back to the communities where it operates.
